Wandering Wednesday – Southern Italy [Part 2] Pompeii!

Last week I talked about the Amalfi coast. The next leg of our journey took us to Pompei. This was what we were most excited about, but there was one negative to this day. We picked this tour because it seemed like it would, in theory, give us the most time in Pompei. However, that wasn’t the case! I could have done with a lot less time in Amalfi [the town is really tiny], and then they took us to a really long lunch, and to a cameo shop.

Okay, so my husband bought me a beautiful cameo necklace, BUT STILL.

So we only had a total of about an hour and a half in Pompei. Which is nowhere near enough. My serious advice? Plan on spending a few days here. If we could do it over, we would have not done a tour, and gone to Pompeii on our own, so we had at least the whole day.

But we plan on going back one day. It was an amazing place to visit.

I took a TON of pictures here.

Just before walking through the front gates of the city

Before actually entering the city, I was already so excited by what I saw.

Stepping back in time

It started raining unfortunately just as we entered the city, so we ran for cover in the marketplace.

Looking out into the center of the market

The circular area they believe was where the fish were held. On one wall it looked like advertisement almost for what was available in the market.

Bread and fish

Or chicken and wine?

The individual stalls are still intact.

That’s all for now – I have a lot of pictures, so I am going to try to spread them out a little so it’s not overloading you.

But overall, the sense in Pompeii is very different than other ruins we visited. Other places the areas were just left to fall apart. This place is frozen in a time so different from ours, and yet there are so many things that are similar. Like gutters, and pizza ovens, and sliding doors [yes!], signs to beware of dogs even.

So I have a lot to show you guys from this place. Can you imagine if I had spent more time here? It would be a month of nothing but Pompeii. Which I suppose isn’t a bad thing!

This weekend I’m traveling to Indiana to visit family, and it’s already so cold there! I am not prepared! I am taking my laptop and will lock myself inside if it is too cold and work on my NaNoWriMo. THEY CAN’T STOP ME.
