Musical Inspiration

The best time for planning a book is while you’re doing the dishes.  ~Agatha Christie

When I sit down to write, I always have to have my music playing. No exaggeration. I love music, and I love connecting music to a story. But I have two different playlists. I have my music for when I am in the zone and writing ALL THE WORDS. This playlist is very instrumental, no vocals really, unless they are softer, like chanting. And then I have my playlist for inspiration, which is a mish mash of so many different kinds of music that I’ve pulled together because the lyrics call to me, and often they actually have inspired a scene in my head as I’m say, driving [though this is always so frustrating because I am DRIVING and can’t write my ideas down].

So I thought it would be fun [for me, but hey, maybe for you too] to write down some of the songs that I have marked as my inspiration for Fallen, and the lyrics that especially grab me. Later on, I will definitely explain why these songs inspired me and what scenes they inspired throughout the book.

Darkness – Darren Hayes
I have been waiting
Always waiting for something new
Happiness has always ended
In the blink of an eye
There was no one attending
No one attending

Running Up That Hill – Placebo cover
And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building.
If I only could, oh…

Step Into The Light – Darren Hayes
I have turned away from you
And I am godless
A wasteland of poison
A hidden fortress
I have blackened out the stars
And hidden frequencies
I have silenced all the waves
And forbidden secrecies

Weapon – Matthew Good
Here by my side, an angel
Here by my side, the devil
Never turn your back on me
Never turn your back on me, again
Here by my side, it’s Heaven

Who Would Have Thought – Darren Hayes
I had to find you, had to let you know
That you weren’t alone
We didn’t make the rules
I had to find you, had to get right back
To you

Taken By The Sea – Darren Hayes
and I want you and that’s so terrifying
and I want you to help put out the fire
cause I am an island, you are the ocean
and all of my sadness taken by the sea

 Iris – Goo Goo Dolls
And I don’t want the world to see me
‘Cause I don’t think that they’d understand
When everything’s meant to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

Roll Away Your Stone – Mumford & Sons
You told me that I would find a hole,
Within the fragile substance of my soul
And I have filled this void with things unreal,
And all the while my character it steals

Cruel Cruel World – Darren Hayes
Sudden emotions
I have awoken
I’m wet behind the ears
To find myself in such a cruel cruel world
And nobody gets me
Nobody gets me
Nobody gets me like you
And everyone left me
Everyone left me
Everyone left me but you
You’re the only one
The only one
The only who gets through
And when my hope is gone
I’m feeling numb
The only one I let though is you
You get me through
You get me through this cruel cruel world
